Review: You've Got Hate Mail by Pippa Grant (Accidentally Infamous #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Rejoice, Romancelandia! Pippa Grant has a new series, and if she wasn't already considered the Queen of Rom-Coms by countless readers, this series starter would certainly have earned her the title. You've Got Hate Mail is the first in Grant's Accidentally Infamous series, which has a sanctuary called Makepeace Cellars as its backdrop. It's a place that welcomes individuals--and in some cases, their families--who have experienced online infamy. Its newest guest is Constance Gwendolyn Garland, better known as Cricket Garland, a thirty-year-old social media influencer who learns that wearing underwear at all times isn't such a bad thing. Now, not only has she lost her job and become the focus of ridicule and rebuke, it looks like there's actually a website dedicated to her all too public shame. Cricket hopes to find refuge in Makepeace Cellars, but things don't get off to a great start when she encounters a stranger just as she's barenaked in the bathroom. Giving Heath Moriarty a black eye wasn't the best way to make a good impression, and it seems the thirtysomething widower and dad to six-year-old Lavender and sassy cat Fluffy pretty much hates her. Maybe it would be best for Cricket to keep her distance, but repairs have her in closer proximity to the grumpy, handsome handyman she likes more than she should.

Every time I go online, coming across a story about someone who's gone viral, some for the right reasons, others for, well, for reasons I'm sure they'd rather forget. Now, I must admit that there are times where the negative reaction some receive is merited, especially when it involves content that's purposely trying to evoke a response from viewers. In the case of our heroine, Cricket, however, welp, I couldn't help but feel terribly for her. She sure as heck wasn't getting much of anything from her family, not counting the grief and disdain thrown her way. So, her finding such a wonderful support system in the women of Makepeace Cellars. Then there was Heath and Lavender, and that father and daughter duo definitely takes the cake. Heath's love and adoration when it came to Lav was beyond endearing. The fact that he was such a patient cat dad to Fluffy earned him bonus points. This had the expected romance and comedy, but Pippa Grant knows how to do slow burn and found family, and boy, she does them so darn well. With You've Got Hate Mail kicking this series off to a fantastic start, I cannot wait to see what the next two Accidentally Infamous books have to offer readers. Five stars!
