Review: My Kind of Guy by Sarina Bowen (Hockey Guys #4)

"I just don't have a lot to give." I look up at him, trying to make him understand. "But if I did? I'd give it to you."
Don't you just love it when an author surprises the heck out of you by announcing that there's a new book in the offing in a great series that you thought already came to an end? That's exactly what happened when Sarina Bowen let her readers know that there was a fourth novel in her Hockey Guys series, and I most certainly was not going to look a gift horse in the mouth! If you're new to the series or to Bowen's writing, My Kind of Guy is a more than acceptable starting point as it works quite well as a standalone, even as it has loose ties to the earlier books in the series. Just make sure to check out those first three Hockey Guys novels, and if you find yourself curious as to Bowen's backlist, trust me when I say you won't regret perusing the plethora of stories--M/F and M/M, romance (new adult, sports, small town, etc.) and suspense--that this wordsmith has steadily whipped out over the past dozen years.
My Kind of Guy is the story of two men--one who knows what he wants, and the other unsure if he's the one ready to give it to him. While his hockey skills made him a standout in high school and college, twenty-five-year-old Becker James finds himself experiencing more lows than highs as the backup goalie for the Ice Colts, a minor league affiliate team in Loveland, Colorado. The lone highlight of Beck's weeks as of late has been hanging out at Sportsballs, a queer-friendly sports bar in North Denver. It doesn't hurt that it's co-owned by Seth Forrester, the guy that Beck has been crushing on. When he hears that Forest's beer league hockey team is in need of a replacement goalie for one game, Beck decides to shoot his shot with the thirty-four-year-old single dad. He'll be their goalie if Forest agrees to one night with him. Forest doesn't do hookups, but Beck isn't about to give up; not when he believes that Forest is his kind of guy.
This book gave me the feels! All the feels, people! I'm a fan of witty humor, thoughtful emotive moments, and swoony romance. When they're blended together with mesmerizing storytelling and headlined by main characters who you wouldn't mind spending time with if they were real people (and that's saying something considering I'm antisocial), well, I count my lucky stars. Sarina Bowen is a go-to author for a reason--okay, for many reasons--and it was The Understatement of the Year, the third book in her The Ivy Years series, that was my first ever M/M hockey romance read back in 2015. It also remains one of my all-time favorite reads, and Graham and Rikker are my Roman Empire (I'm not entirely sure if I'm using that term correctly, but oh well...). Beck and Forest, however, came oh-so-close to knocking those two off their perch. My Kind of Guy was my kind of hockey romance with a le-sigh-worthy ending. Five-plus stars!
