Review: Not Your Biggest Fan by Sara Ney (Not Yours #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by Montlake.

Not Your Biggest Fan is the first book in the new Not Yours football romance series from bestselling author Sara Ney and it's published by Montlake. This romantic comedy read has two main characters in their late twenties--he's 29, and I'm guessing she's about the same age--Harlow James, the creator of a dating app called Kissmet, and Landon Burke, a professional football player, who have an unforgettable meet-cute and find themselves being thrown together by fate under somewhat expected circumstances. This is a standalone, so you don't need to read any of Ney's previous releases to enjoy this series starter.

Harlow James is from Green Bay, Wisconsin but she's hustling and bustling in New York for work. She may be a girl from the Midwest, but she's learned a thing or two during her short stay in the city that doesn't sleep. So, when she offers up a bit of advice to the hot, muscular guy in line at a food truck, she knows she's helping out. Unfortunately, the stranger doesn't listen and orders the chicken kebabs; fortunately for Landon Burke, he lives to tell the humiliating tale of hours spent regretting not listening to the beautiful, unassuming woman at Central Park. They happen to be in the same hotel, and they spend time together. But Harlow only knows him as Andy, the supposedly unemployed guy headed to Ohio for family. She has no idea he's the NFL's most wanted free agent, and that he's about to make his obvious presence known around the Frozen Tundra which is in football town--her hometown--Green Bay.

This was a highly entertaining beginning to the Not Yours series, with Harlow and Andy's first meeting being one of the more original ones I've come across in recent memory. Theirs wasn't a case of love or even lust at first sight, but there was an inkling of a connection as they debated the pros and cons of chicken kebabs from a food truck in New York. Fate, of course, had them crossing paths again, with Harlow bearing witness to just how right she was when she warned Andy off of those kebabs. I liked that while their attraction was growing, they did spend time getting to know each other before actually jumping into bed together. Andy was such a sweetheart, and Harlow was a breath of fresh air. I loved the family dynamics on both sides, and Andy's conversations with his best friend, Dex, and Harlow's with her ever-supportive quad of besties had me laughing out loud. And did I mention that there's a dog named Kevin as well? My one quibble is that there was never a mention of those three words that you come to expect in a romance novel, especially considering what he does in the final chapter, you'd think they'd have said those words sometime prior, but it is what it is. Not Your Biggest Fan is still a 4.5-starred read.
