Review: The Red by Tiffany Reisz

Note: This ARC was provided by 8th Circle Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

“Is this all a dream? That’s the only thing that makes any sense.”
“You aren’t dreaming,” he said, and she knew that was true. She was awake and had been every time they had met. “But if it were a dream, would you want to wake up?” he asked.
A good question. A fair question. A hard question, but one she answered easily.
“Never.”

Twenty-five-year-old Mona Lisa St. James made a deathbed promise to her mother--that she would do whatever she had to in order to keep the doors to The Red Gallery, nicknamed The Red, open. But this could be a promise she may not be equipped to keep. She's been forced to let every single one of her employees go, left only with the gallery cat that's considered The Red its home for a decade. And then a mysterious man appears, standing before an ordinary painting that turns out to have an extraordinary secret beneath its top layer. From there, Malcolm makes Mona an offer, one that may stun her sensibilities but one that makes perfect sense for her to say "yes" to.

If you've read a Tiffany Reisz book before, then you know just how delectable and deviant the steamier scenes in her stories can get, and The Red certainly doesn't disappoint with as far as that is concerned. But again, it isn't all about sex. Reisz has proven time and again that she's one hell of a talented writer, and with her latest standalone release, she weaves a scintillating and enthralling tale of a woman named Mona who contemplates whether or not she should agree to an arrangement with a devilishly distinguished Englishman named Malcolm. The agreement would entail Mona submitting to Malcolm for a year and in payment, she would receive art to sell to save The Red.

There are quite a few works of art that are mentioned in the book and if you aren't familiar with the titles of the pieces, you can always Google them, although Reisz does do non-art-loving readers a favor by describing each artwork really well. Now, how those pieces work as part of the story is part what makes this an even more fascinating read. There's more going on than meets the eye, literally and figuratively, for Mona, but I absolutely loved being there trying to figure it all out alongside her. Five-plus-starred The Red is unconventional, and just like one of my all-time favorites, the Beauty series by A.N. Roquelaure (aka Anne Rice), this book is in a class all its own. ♥
