Review: A Promise Broken by Anissa Garcia (Promise #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Barclay Publicity in exchange for an honest review.

I shook my head, my voice breaking. “I never wanted anyone else. After you, I couldn’t be with anyone else. You were everything to me. You were my dream.”
She tipped her head up, her eyes focused on mine. “Were?”

From the moment I started the Promise series more than a year ago with A Promise Kept, I knew I was going to be in for a journey that would have its share of heartbreaks and heartwarming moments. Here we are, three full-length novels and one novella later, and Anissa Garcia has proven my initial inkling right. A Promise Broken is the third novel and fourth release in this fantastic contemporary romance series. While it would be easy to classify this as belong to the falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling trope, this was much more than that. There's a hint of taboo, not just because thirty-four-year-old Zachary Collins has a thing for his best friend's younger sister, twenty-seven-year-old Hilary Matthews, but also due to the fact that Zach had been taken in by the Matthews family when his own parents proved to be failures at their responsibilities, making him part of the brood and, to a certain degree, Zach and Hilary like unofficial siblings. Take note: they were NEVER siblings of any legal sort, so it's not as taboo as it may seem to be, but it's enough of a connection that them being intimate or romantic would've been awkward.

Zach doesn't do commitment and the guy Hilary had been in a committed relationship with for four years turned out to be cheating on her. He always treated her like an overly protective brother and she acted like things were nothing but platonic between the two of them. But then all it takes is one look that invites one kiss that turns into one night together. But nothing is as simple as them building a relationship from that hookup, right? After all, Zach was an unwanted, neglected child who found home and understood the true meaning of family with that of his best friend's. Promises made to Evan, Zach's best friend and Hilary's brother, were made--promises to watch over Hil and make sure that she would never be hurt, but in the end, when well-meaning decisions turn out to have painful results, hurt becomes unavoidable. These two had tension of almost every kind and there were a lot of trials that they had no choice but to face, but goodness, how my heart broke for them each time while cheering them on to get their acts together and make everything right. A Promise Broken was simply divine. Five-plus stars. ♥
