Review: Pounding Skin by L.A. Witt (Skin Deep Inc. #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

Pounding Skin is the second novel in author L.A. Witt's Skin Deep Inc. series, which brings together men from the US Navy and the tattoo artists of Skin Deep Inc. This new release takes things up a notch with a story of a twenty-eight tattooist who comes to grips with his bisexuality and a thirty-something Navy pilot who has never believed in love and commitment. Matthew Huffman has always insisted that he wasn't gay whenever he was asked whether he was or wasn't, but one threesome later, Matt questions just how straight he is. When Jon Russell steps across the threshold of the tattoo parlor where Matt works, the attraction is both mutual and intense. Jon's never pretended to be anything but gay, and while he may have balked at losing a bet and being forced to get ink permanently tattooed on his ass, meeting the gorgeous tattoo artist working on him makes it somewhat worthwhile. Jon makes it clear that all he's looking for is casual, and Matt readily agrees, but as one hookup becomes two and extends to days, weeks, and months, is either man prepared to face the truth of their situation?

I quite liked that Matt was dealing with the realization that bisexuality was an actual viable truth for him to fully embrace. This wasn't a case of becoming GFY (gay for you, or in this case, gay for Jon). It takes Matt examining his past and understanding why he was so adamant to reiterate his being absolutely heterosexual for most of his life to be able to move forward with not just being bi but being with Jon. In Jon's case, however, it's a matter of opening his eyes to a different kind of reality, one that he doesn't see coming, and then when it's already there, he does something I wanted to smack him for. But I do love how everything kind of sneaks up on both of them and then how they choose to deal with it all. Colin Spencer and Daniel Moore, who were featured in the series starter, Back Piece, are here as recurring characters, and they also have their own set of challenges and I'm curious to see how that plays out. We're also introduced to two other characters who are paired in the third book in the series, Cover Up, which will be released later this year, and one that I'm looking forward to reading. Pounding Skin gets 4.5 stars. ♥
