Review: Give Me Hell by Kate McCarthy (Give Me #4)

The much-awaited fourth novel in the Give Me series from author Kate McCarthy is finally here and it's the one story that fans have been itching to get their hands on. Give Me Hell is all about Mackenzie Valentine and Jake Romero. Mac has been a scene-stealer from the beginning of the series while Jake started off more in the periphery but has worked his way into not just Mac's heart but that of readers throughout the first three novels. Mac and Jake share a history that they keep between themselves. It's a history that not even those closest to them are privy too. It's filled with heart-fluttering snippets that tend to end in heartbreaking drifting in separate directions. Just when Mac needs him most, Jake turns her away, and that, in turn, further devolves their relationship. Forever tied to one another, not just by the fact that they share the same circle of friends, but also by the feelings they have that have never gone away, Mac and Jake are about to get caught in something that has very dire consequences. In a distressing end, hearts and lives could end up not only broken but forever lost on all fronts.

Mac and Jake's story begins from where they are right now and then takes readers back to when it all began as teenagers. There are quite a few points in their story that overlap with when the first three books--Give Me Love, Give Me Strength, and Give Me Grace--take place, which is part of the reason why I'm highly recommending that those novels be read before you head into this one. Another reason is that the cast of characters, from the Valentine siblings to the Jamieson brood and the eponymous band, recurs all throughout and somehow, if you aren't familiar with them going on, you end up feeling a tad lost, almost as if you missed something that everyone else who read the three books prior is able to understand. Just like those before it, this fourth novel is quite a lengthy read, but I'm guessing majority of the readers are those who've read the first three, so they're probably as invested as I am and have been looking forward to Mac and Jake's story for what feels like forever, and yes, it's worth the time you put in. They went through hell, but they do get their happy ending. Four stars for Give Me Hell. ♥
