Review: Chasing Vivi by A.M. Hargrove

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Social Butterfly PR in exchange for an honest review.

I've read a book co-written by A.M. Hargrove, but Chasing Vivi is the first novel that she's written that I've been able to read. It's a standalone contemporary romance, but a few reviews on Goodreads have mentioned that it's loosely connected to A Special Obsession, which the author released earlier in the year. Not having read that one, though, I was still able to enjoy this romance, although now I'm all curious as to what that other book was about.

Vivienne Renard and Prescott Beckham went to the same high school but were never friends. Vivi was the one who did Prescott's homework and got paid for her efforts but they didn't belong in the same circle of friends. She wasn't the type of girl he hung out with or even dated back then. She was the shy, chubby brainiac who came from a family struggling to make ends meet and he was the popular rich teenager who could have any girl he wanted.

Fast forward a decade later and Prescott seems like the world is his oyster. When he sees Vivi again, it's obvious that she'd done her fair share of growing up. She's gorgeous and confident and she makes it clear to Prescott that she isn't the least bit interested in catching up like old friends because they were never friends to begin with. He wants her and Prescott always gets what he wants. This time around, though, he'll have do a whole lot of chasing.

Slow burn romances can be hit or miss. Take things too slow, and readers tend to get bored. When it's done right, however, it's an absolute win because seeing a love story progress from nothing to something then to everything can be rewarding. In the case of Chasing Vivi, A.M. Hargrove knocked it out of the ballpark, making sure that readers absolutely got to know Prescott and Vivi and fall in love with them while they fall in love with each other.

There's a lot more to both Vivi and Prescott than meets the eye and I liked that they weren't these two absolutes. They were human and had their shortcomings, but it was difficult to not like them and cheer them on as they made their way to an inevitable but hard-earned happily-ever-after. Chasing Vivi may have been my first solo A.M. Hargrove read, but it certainly won't be the last. I'm awarding this enemies-to-lovers romance 4.5 out of five stars. ♥
