Review: The Grumpiest Billionaire by Pippa Grant (Small Town Sisterhood #2)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

What's a runaway billionaire to do when his plans for a great escape go awry, all thanks to an uninvited stowaway in the backseat? The Grumpiest Billionaire, which is the second novel in Pippa Grant's Small Town Sisterhood, finds Miles Oliver Cumberland IV, Oliver to those closest to him, wanting nothing more than to get away from the life he's been stuck with. Having Daphne Merriweather-Brown pop up from the backseat of the car he's driving--not well, mind you--is a problem. Forcing her to leave him be and go back to wherever she came from is easier said than done, especially since she has her reasons for being in his vehicle. Now, the twenty-nine-year-old disinherited socialite needs to convince the thirty-one-year-old billionaire CEO of Miles2Go--and her older sister's former fiancĂ©--to go back home if she has any hope to ensure that the nonprofit she works for continues to receive their funding from his family's business empire. That problem is that Oliver has zero intention of returning to the world he desperately wants to keep in his rearview mirror. Daphne falling for him, though, is a different level of seriously complicated.

I'm a sucker for grumpy/sunshine romances, but Oliver and Daphne's story also happened to be a slow burn, and that is catnip for a romance reader like me! The banter was top-notch, with these two bickering like it was their business for the first few chapters, and then, finding their groove as unexpected road trip partners, unlikely frenemies, and ultimately, much more. The fact that they both happen to have very little affection for their respective parents highlighted how having money doesn't come with guaranteed happiness. Daphne had already found her own tribe--the people that loved and accepted her for who she was, regardless of whether they shared the same bloodline or not--and it was clear she wished the same for Oliver. Of course, this wouldn't be a Pippa Grant romantic comedy without the quirk and shenanigans the main characters encounter, and believer you me, I laughed my little black heart out--the same heart that squeezed in my chest as Oliver and Daphne got over their humps on their journey towards their sweet happily-ever-after. The new reading year is off to a five-starred start with The Grumpiest Billionaire.
