Third time's the charm because I've found my favorite book in the Wild at Heart series! Don't get me wrong; Stealing Hearts got the series off to a fantastic start, and Falling Stars kept things rolling quite nicely. Burning Skies, however, was a notch above, with a Romeo and Juliet-esque feel to the story, and some honest-to-goodness sizzle that never fizzled, even after the main characters got together. A quick note: This book is part of a series, and it can be read as a standalone; that being said, there are recurring characters and potential spoilers when it comes to the stories of the first two couples, so I highly recommend you read the books in order--or not, since I know not everyone is a stickler for reading order.
Crushing on a sworn enemy could be considered an exercise in futility, but having said enemy crush your heart is a guaranteed way to ensure you keep your distance from him--or at least that's what happened in the case of Honey McAllister when it came to Beau Walker. Seven years after that humiliating rejection, she makes it clear that she wants nothing to do with him. Even if she was still interested, Honey's family would make their displeasure--and that's putting it mildly--known. But when random fires at the high school have Beau and his crew coming to the rescue, avoidance is no longer an option. Neither is pretending that their fiery chemistry doesn't exist. Will crossing the line burn everything to the ground?
Enemies-to-lovers is a go-to romance trope of mine for a reason. I love the tension and anticipation and the back and forth between the characters as they try to not fall for each other. In the case of Honey and Beau, if the generations-long feud between their families wasn't enough, there was also that night seven years ago that they have to contend with. I admired Honey's independence while also trying to strike the balance between love for family and love for Beau. I empathized with Beau, whose middle child energy I easily connected with. Aside from the romance, there was also some mystery and suspense, thanks to an unlikely arsonist! Heat, heart, and home are front and center with Lex Martin's Burning Skies. Five stars!
