Review: Out of Bounds by R.S Grey (Summer Games #2)

I won't lie. When the Summer Olympics roll around every four years, I don't watch all the events. There are only a few sports that I'm usually keen on keeping an eye on. If it's solely the figure skating events in the Winter Games, I only really watch tennis, swimming, diving, and gymnastics, the last one being the sports theme of the second novel in the Summer Games series from bestselling author R.S. Grey. Out of Bounds is the story of the U.S. gymnastics team training for the upcoming Olympics, with the focus on twenty-year-old gymnast Brie Watson and twenty-nine-year-old coach Erik Winter. There's a taboo element to their story, both because of the age difference and because of the positions they hold as part of the same team. It was angsty as well as humorous and was the perfect read to wrap this past weekend with.

Brie Watson sees her being an Olympian as not merely a chance to represent her country but to help her and her mother financially as well. She knows what's at stake and in order to receive the monetary incentives attached to each one, nothing and no one is going to get in her way...not even the newly assigned team coach, Erik Winter. They get off to a less than stellar start and already there's a tension between the two that the other girls on the team can't help but notice. Brie's relationships with all her past coaches have been nothing but supportive and respectful, but with Erik, she can't seem to help herself. They're adversaries more than they are mentor and mentee, pushing each other's buttons. The undeniable attraction becomes a source for them to play a risque game, one that may end with both of them as losers.

This book had a lot going for it, with an intriguing story of two people who should not have anything more than a professional relationship between them and their respective back stories. Brie's mother and Erik's father are what inspire them to push themselves to be all they can be but for completely different reasons. As far as their own relationship is concerned, Brie and Erik have a whole love-hate thing going on, with the hate belying the fact that they're torn between wanting each other and not being sure if they should pursue it or not. Whatever emotion they're currently dealing with, there's no denying how passionate they both are and it's that passion that makes them such a fantastic couple to get to know and read about as they fall in love and finally accept that they're "it" for each other. Gah! I loved Out of Bounds and give it five stars. ♥
