Whenever I need an escape from whatever is weighing on me, I rarely go wrong with reading a Lani Lynn Vale-penned romance. Her newest series, Content Advisory, is turning out to be a highly entertaining one, and with the release of the second book, Look at Her and Die, Vale offers readers a grumpy/grumpier romance. Yup, you read that right. To quote the late great Bill Withers, "ain't no sunshine" when it comes to Posy Hicks and Searcy Hodges' story. Posy's a former Navy SEAL who took over the family ranch after his father and stepmother were killed in a car accident, leaving him to take care of his younger sister, Scottie, and he also works as a part-time paramedic, thus earning him the nickname Doc. On the other hand, Searcy's taken over responsibilities her mother should be handling, i.e. being in charge of the family diner and taking care of her three younger siblings, Calliope, Kent, and Anders, with her older brother, Koda, helping where he can whenever he was on leave from the Air Force. Both Posy and Searcy know all too well what it's like to put others first; will being together be their shot at a happily-ever-after?
This could very well have been my first ever grumpy/grumpier romance! I tried to recall if I'd ever come across the trope before, but I honestly don't think I've read one in all the decades I've been reading romance. Both Posy and Searcy were as unique a couple as their first names, and the connection between them was one that was highly satisfying to see develop and evolve the more time they spent with each other. They were such caretakers, particularly when it came to their respective siblings, and I liked that when they were together, they were able to put themselves first for a change. And the fact that those very same siblings didn't give them grief--well, it took a bit for Calliope, but she wasn't as terrible as she was first made out to be--was a clear indicator that they knew Posy and Searcy deserved love and all the trimmings. I appreciated the author highlighting the importance of family and how family isn't necessarily about blood. Look at Her and Die gets four stars, and I can't wait for the next Truth Teller to get his HEA.
