Review: The Forever Rule by Carrie Ann Ryan (The Cage Family #1)

Note: An advance reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

The Forever Rule is the first full-length novel in Carrie Ann Ryan's The Cage Family series, but there is a free prequel novella, Before I Knew, which is where the main characters, Aston Cage and Blakely Graves, form their connection, and I highly recommend that it be read prior to this new release. (Fun fact: Before I Knew is already included in The Forever Rule!) Aston and Blakely's story is about a missed connection that is rekindled when the latter is hired to work in Cage Enterprises, the family-owned business that Aston is the president of. For longtime readers of the author, you'll recall that the Cages were introduced in Best Friend Temptation (Ford Cage's romance with Noah Montgomery-Gallagher and Greer Cassidy) and part of this new story overlaps with the events in His Second Chance (Phoebe Cage Dixon's romance with Kane Montgomery Carr), books four and six of the Montgomery Ink Legacy series. While Ford's and Phoebe's books don't need to be perused before this new one, doing so is something I'll wholly support.

I've been eagerly awaiting this series ever since the original Cages and the Cage Dixons crossed paths in their late father's lawyer's office back in His Second Chance, and Before I Knew whetted my appetite for more of Aston and Blakely. With Aston being the eldest among ALL the Cage siblings, the weight of responsibility was crippling, to the point that he lived his life by rules set by his father--a man who was NOT to be admired. Blakely, on the other hand, was a woman to be admired--someone who valued her independence and was loyal, caring, and compassionate. I loved her relationship with Isabella, aka her best friend who just happened to be the oldest Cage Dixon sibling. Blakely also was that light that Aston desperately needed, and I appreciated that she got along quite famously with his brothers. (FYI, she already had good relationships with the other Cages, aka the Cage Dixons.) The Forever Rule gets 4.5 stars, and I'm looking forward to getting to know the rest of these siblings as The Cage Family moves on.
