Changes Going On is the sequel to the Changes series starter, Changes Coming Down, and yes, the books need to be read in order. Scott Edison (23) is a professional hockey player who has a more than promising future in the NHL, and he's let everyone in on a secret--he's gay and he's in a polyamorous relationship with two men, Casey Barlow (33) and William Rice (37). Casey lost his re-election bid as sheriff of Masons Crossing, Kansas, but he's determined to put in his fair share on the ranch he now owns alongside his life partners. Will may know what he's doing with Tri-Cross Ranch and he loves Casey and Scott, but with the unexpected arrival of Scott's mother, he can't help but feel like the odd man out.
Scott was done keeping his sexuality and his relationship with the men he loves under wraps, but dealing with the aftermath is far more difficult than even he'd anticipated. Will and Casey reassure him that he did the right thing, but having paparazzi staking out the ranch is making life a wee bit more stressful. Just as everyone is focused on spending the summer together on the ranch, Casey is informed about the death of the new sheriff, and while it may have looked like a suicide to the untrained eye, it soon becomes clear that the man was murdered. He's asked to come in as an investigator, and with Will's and Scott's blessing, he agrees. And then things get even more complicated when Rusty Dolan, a high school senior, reaches out when he voices his suspicions about the manner in which his younger brother passed.
There's no rest for the weary, and Kaje Harper certainly keeps Will, Casey, and Scott on their toes with this sequel. One of my favorite things about this book was that after everything that happened previously, it wasn't as simple as having these three men riding off into the sunset. Yes, I basically wanted more Will, Casey, and Scott, and that's exactly with Harper gave readers. She didn't just dial it in either, coming up with a story that had its complexities, but not to the point where you end up lost and confused. The introduction of new characters, especially Rusty and his best friend, Kris, made this layered story even better. With romance, suspense, and mystery, Changes Going On was 4.5-starred read.
