Review: Changes Coming Down by Kaje Harper (Changes #1)

It's been a few years since my last Kaje Harper read, and having just finished Changes Coming Down, the first in the author's Changes series, I honestly don't know why I haven't taken the time to read more of her work. Well, I've been trying to rectify that, having recently heard of this aforementioned series, and suffice it to say that I'm a wee bit obsessed with the triad of William Rice, Casey Barlow, and Scott Edison. Yup, the first two books in the series feature these same three main characters, and the fact that I'm now rather invested in them tells you something considering poly-romances aren't a go-to for me. It takes a lot for me to be convinced that all parties involved are equal partners in the relationship, i.e. that the love and commitment is the same for each one. Welp, consider me convinced when it came to this MMM trio.
Okay, so the three MCs of Changes Coming Down are Will Rice, the foreman at Tri-Cross Ranch, which is owned by Graham and Annmarie Slater, who took Will in when he was seventeen and who has been a part of the ranch the past two decades, so I'm guessing he's about 37; Casey Barlow, a former Marine and current sheriff of Masons Crossing, a small town in Kansas; and Scott Edison, a twenty-three-year-old hockey player currently in the AHL with dreams of--and the talent to make it--being called up to the NHL. Casey and Scott were already together for a year prior to them meeting Will and inviting him to join them. They've been a throuple for three years, but none of them are out of the closet, and obviously, their relationship isn't known. But then an accident that turns out to be an intentional hit-and-run becomes the catalyst of changes--changes none of them were ever prepared for, but ready or not, changes are coming.
From the polygamous relationship to the crime involving the Slaters and everything in between, I was hooked. Scott, Casey, and Will are already together at the beginning of the story, but the author provides a couple of flashbacks that make it possible to know how their paths crossed and any other important bits of history and information. It was interesting to see how these three very different men worked as a throuple--and they did work. They made sense together, and while there were obvious challenges when it came to their relationship, there was no denying that they loved, respected, and trusted each other. And the mystery regarding what happened to the couple that treated Will like their own? It was pretty clear from the get-go who the villain was, as were their motives, but I was still eager to see how it all played out, and it truly was rather satisfying to see it resolved. All in all, Changes Coming Down was an engaging read and a more than promising series start, with Kaje Harper's impressive writing. This earns 4.5 stars.
