Review: The Complication with the Best Man by Piper Rayne (Lake Starlight #5)

The Complication with the Best Man is book number five in writing duo Piper Rayne's Lake Starlight small town, second generation romance series, and this is Harper Bailey's story, one she shares with a firefighter from Vermont named Finn McDonald. Harper is a wedding planner and the daughter of Austin and Holly Bailey, whose journey to their happily-ever-after plays out in Lessons from a One-Night Stand, the first book in the Baileys series. History sort of repeats itself when Harper and Finn have a one-night stand of their own the day of her cousin's wedding, wherein she was the maid of honor and he was the best man. They go their separate ways, but Harper never quite forget about that night--or the man who made it so darn memorable. It seems, however, that Finn left her something to remember him by, as evidenced by the two pink lines on her pregnancy test. And when she sees him again, telling Finn that he's going to be a father is put on hold when it turns out that she's the wedding planner for his wedding!

Talk about living up to the title of the book! As evidenced by the past experiences of certain people in the small Alaskan town of Lake Starlight, one night stands can, indeed, become rather complicated. Harper and Finn may have shared a life-changing moment together, but they also didn't know a whole lot about each other, which is why I appreciated Piper and Rayne not making this the usual pining-for-one-another-after-one-night-together sort of thing. I liked seeing these two would-be parents create a more powerful bond as they got to know each other once decisions were made regarding co-parenting. Also, if the note in the blurb wasn't enough, I'm going to reiterate that there is ZERO cheating in the book even though Finn is engaged to someone when he and Harper meet again. You'll have to read the book in order to see how that all plays out, although I'm happy to report that it's resolved early on. There isn't any unnecessary drama, making The Complication with the Best Man a fairly lighthearted, 4.5-starred novel.
