Review: Return of the Bad Boy by Jessica Lemmon (Second Chance #4)
Note: This ARC was provided by Grand Central Publishing (Forever) in exchange for an honest review.
Return of the Bad Boy is the fourth and latest installment in the Jessica Lemmon-penned Second Chance series. We first met rock star Asher Knight and literary agent Gloria Shields in the series starter Bringing Home the Bad Boy and we got to see the chemistry and attraction between the two of them only for it to go astray after Glo finds a groupie named Jordan Trudeau in Ash's home rental. A couple or so years later, they finally end up having on heck of an unforgettable coming together. And then Ash finds out that he's got a three-year-old son named Hawk, leading him to purchase a second home in Evergreen Cove in order to spend more time getting to know his little boy. It certainly doesn't hurt that Glo moved from Chicago to the Cove, but with trying to get Hawk's grandmother and mother to agree to more visitations and working on Knight Time's new album away from his home base of Los Angeles, Ash has a lot going on. With Gloria trying to keep her distance, Asher needs to decide to step back or to make her want what only he can offer.
Talk about a marathon read! I went through all four currently available books in one day and by the time I finished, I knew the four couples featured and wished a place like Evergreen Cove actually existed (though I'm sure there are numerous locations that are similar to it all over the world but I doubt it had four bad boys with good hearts as irresistible as the ones in the Second Chance series lingering around). Asher and Gloria's love story began in the first book, and I've been itching for them to get their actual shot to see if a happily-ever-after is up next for them after having their friends find their own. With Gloria's abandonment issues--courtesy of her parents who were far too busy drowning in addiction--constantly shadowing her, Asher has to figure out if he wants to put in the effort to making her see how good they are together. Of course, with everything going on with his band's awaited next album and his recently discovered son, Ash is pulled in different directions, but kudos to the man for his undeniable persistence.
I really liked Asher because he was so much more than the manwhore he started out to be in the first book. The man proved he was a good father, even if his time with Hawk was limited to whatever was permitted by the little boy's very involved grandmother and highly immature and selfish mother. He also showed his naysayers that he was serious about Gloria and kept at her because he was that committed at creating a future with the stubborn woman. Speaking of Glo, she saw deserves props for how she handled that confrontation with Hawk's mother. She gave a voice to what needed to be said out of love and concern for both Ash and Hawk, and this was while she was still hesitant to go all in when it came to a relationship. This was a wonderful story about love, friendship, and family--which just happens to be an ongoing theme in the series. I'm not sure if this is the end to Second Chance, but I shall check out Love in the Balance in the meantime since I'm all curious about the other Downey brothers. Return of the Bad Boy gets 4.5 stars. ♥
