Review: Moth by Jennifer Foor

Moth is a standalone romantic suspense novel from author Jennifer Foor and is about Timothy "Moth" Douglas, an agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency. Moth has been after one particular drug cartel for years but when his brother is killed in a suspected connection with the cartel, what once was a professional mission becomes a personal vendetta. He goes undercover as a college student to pick up any clues that his brother may have left behind and the answers he's seeking may be held by one young woman named Windy Lewis. But if Moth is keeping his true identity under wraps, Windy is keeping secrets of her own. When he starts to develop feelings for Windy--the very same woman who could hold the key to his case and who may very well be involved in what happened to his brother--Moth is caught in the unfamiliar position of what was supposed to be fake becoming all to real, forcing him to choose between justice for his brother and love for a woman he isn't sure if he can wholly trust. Either choice will end up costing him.
This was my very first Jennifer Foor read and I appreciated that, not only was it told from the primary character's point of view, but that there was no sweetening of the language involved. Moth Douglas says and does what he says and does and makes no apologies for how they're delivered. He can be quite crass but the appeal isn't in his crudity but in it coming off as authentic to his character. Unfortunately, I didn't feel as if I got to know Windy as much as I did Moth and this was a tad disappointing since she is such an integral part of the story. I failed to feel any sort of connection to her or to her plight and I'm the kind of reader that needs to make that connection or else the emotional investment isn't there and the book simply becomes something to pass the time rather than something to experience. The overall story was intriguing and the writing was pretty good--although there were points in the story were it felt like it just went on and on--and while there may have been a couple of misses, Moth turned out to be a 3.5-star read. ♥
