Review: Dare to Take by Carly Phillips (Dare to Love #6)
Note: This ARC was provided by Rock Star Lit PR in exchange for an honest review.
Dare to Take is the sixth book in the highly addictive Dare to Love series from bestselling author Carly Phillips. For those who are a tad confused about this being book number six, the books covering the Dare cousins from New York have been officially put together under a spin-off series, NY Dares. This latest addition is about Tyler Dare, who is the second eldest in the original Dare family, and Ella Shaw, best friend to Avery Dare, the youngest in the original Dare family. Tyler and Ella shared one night together, a night that had Ella giving her virginity to the guy she had feelings for even if he didn't know it, and a night that had Tyler declaring it a mistake and summarily making Ella feel rejected and ashamed. Since then, they've tried to keep their interactions to a bare minimum, and when they have no choice but to engage, it tends to be aloof and stilted. But when Avery gets a call from Ella after she gets mugged in Saint Lucia, Tyler doesn't hesitate to go and make sure Ella is taken care of and ready to return to the U.S. However, a hurricane bearing down on them may have other plans, and when Tyler and Ella are forced together, it could either be filled with uncomfortable silence or one chance they could take to open up and start again.
Prior to reading this sixth addition to the series, my favorite book had been Dare to Hold, Scott Dare and Meg Thompson's love story, but it seems that, at the very least, Tyler and Ella's story has tied it for that position. This was a combination of a second chance romance and a falling-for-the-best-friend's-sibling story with just a bit of mystery thrown into the mix. Fans of the series also get more information with as far as the whole Robert Dare thing goes. For those unfamiliar with the Dare family dynamic, Robert Dare is the father of the nine Dare children, five of whom he had with his wife and four of whom he had with his then-mistress. I wasn't a fan of the Dare patriarch, and I'm using that term VERY loosely, from the beginning, but after everything that came out here, the man is first class indeed--a first class jerk who doesn't deserve the children he has. My heart broke for Tyler but it also broke for Ella, whose own childhood was marred by the death of her mother and the emotional abandonment of her father later on. These two had issues that were weighing them down, but being together gave them that push to finally deal with those issues. Six siblings down, three more to go! I'll be giving Dare to Take 4.5 out of five stars. ♥
