Review: The Beach in Winter by Leslie Pike (Lyon Family #1)

Leslie Pike isn't a new author but I'm embarrassed to admit that her Lyon Family series starter is my first read from her and she definitely made the angst addict in me a happy camper (a tad ironic, I know). The Beach in Winter is the heartrending yet ultimately hopeful story of three people dealing with loss but find solace with each other and learn to live again and find love in different forms in the process. It's been five years since forty-three-year-old Parish Adams lost his beloved son, but the darkness that fills his days and nights show no signs of abating. It's only been weeks since thirty-five-year-old Scarlett Lyon lost her only sister but she's had to move from her home in Montana to Martin's Beach in order to be her nephew Sam's legal guardian. All three are trying to learn to live with their versions of their new normal, but even as they embrace new possibilities, can they see a future as a family?

Stories that involve someone very close to a main character tend to be heavy reads, what more when there's more than one passing in the book affecting more than one character? Parish's son may have been taken from him five years prior, but it's a reminder that we all mourn in our way and that while some are able to move forward with their lives in a short amount of time, some need more time. Who are we to put a deadline or a time frame, right? Scarlett coming along when she did impacted both Parish's and Sam's lives, and I liked seeing how the different relationships developed and evolved--Scarlett and Parish's, Parish and Sam's, and Scarlett and Sam's. I appreciated that Parish and Scarlett weren't replacements for Sam's parents just like Sam wasn't a replacement for Parish's son. The Beach in Winter was a beautiful story about the resilience of the human heart and spirit. This gets four stars. ♥
