Review: Hard Work by K.M. Scott

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Hard Work is a second chance romance and my first read from author K.M. Scott. Nine years ago, Zane Gilford abruptly ended his relationship with Becca Fox without a word of explanation. When they see each other again, it's at the Gilford House Inn, which was passed on to Zane by his mother as a caveat to him receiving his full inheritance. In order for him to lay claim to everything, the inn was to be as, if not more, profitable than it was upon the time it was turned over to him for a period of one year. The inn also happened to be a venue that Becca stayed at regularly. Zane isn't thrilled at being forced to take the reins of a place he never liked and to have to interact with people his mother may have considered family but he saw as nothing more than people he had to pay. Seeing Becca again reminds him of the good times they shared, and he wants to show her that being together was meant to be. But Becca struggles to see if the man she once found herself falling for has indeed changed. Keeping both Becca and the inn is going to take a whole lot of hard work, and Zane has to show he's the man for it.

First things first: I didn't like Zane, and even after some time after having read this book, I still don't like him. The guy barely made a true and honest effort to redeem himself, doing what I felt was the bare minimum in order to get Becca to be his again. He was an absolute jerk towards the inn's staff, and his sincerity was almost always suspect. Just when I thought he had turned a corner, things would be revealed that highlighted that he had some ulterior motive. I was taken by absolute surprise to the guy we were introduced to in the first chapter (which seemed more like a prologue) to the guy who was sitting in his late mother's lawyer's office in the next one. Ugh. Aside from my utter dislike for the male main character, I simply didn't feel like there was much of a connection between him and his female counterpart. For two people who were so into one another during their time together, the fact that they didn't recognize each other years later was weird. The shifts in chapters were also abrupt, as were the changes in Zane's personality. Sigh. Sad to say, Hard Work simply didn't click with me. 2.5 stars. ♥
