Review: Earning His Trust by Alicia Nordwell

Earning His Trust is a second chance romance written by Alicia Nordwell, and it's my first read from the author. Evin lost his husband right before they were to find out that they were going to be parents via surrogacy. Now, his life centers around his six-month-old son Micah, whose needs will always come first. One of those needs includes the right kind of food, thanks to Micah's dietary restrictions. While baking special teething biscuits for his son, Evin suffers burns to his hand and drives himself to the emergency room where he's tended to by none other than his ex--the same ex who upped and left without any sort of goodbye or explanation. But while Evin wants to simply end their re-connection inside the walls of the ER, Ben wonders if this could be his chance to rekindle their friendship and for him to make amends for what happened six years prior, especially since it's obvious that Evin needs a larger support system for himself and Micah. While Ben is hopeful, Evin is wary. Ben has already broken his heart once before, and Evin still mourns his husband's passing. So where does that leave the two erstwhile lovers?

When I first read the synopsis for this, I immediately jumped on it because I had a feeling it would have the angst that I look for as well as that theme of redemption that tends to get to me. Unfortunately, though, something simply didn't click. Maybe it was the fact that I simply didn't feel much for either Evin or Ben. Evin lost points with me when he waffled and told his best friend that he wasn't even sure if what he and his late husband had for years was actually love. Seriously? Simply because the first guy who broke your heart was back in your life, you don't think as highly of the relationship you had with the man who brought that very same heart of yours to life again? Then there was Ben's reasons for the original split and then his using Evin's personal information for his own gain (heading to the man's home without invitation). Sure, it's possible Ben was really being a good guy, but talk about pressing your luck. Sigh. I didn't have an issue with Nordwell's writing, which I thought was actually quite good; my issue was with Evin and Ben and that lack of connection led to all else faltering. Three stars go to Earning His Trust. ♥
