Book Spotlight: Darkness by Kate Sherwood

Darkness
(Common Law #3)
by Kate Sherwood
Date Released: March 6, 2017

About Darkness
A murdered prostitute. An obvious suspect. Clear evidence. For once, Jericho Crewe has a straightforward crime to investigate, and Wade Granger isn’t involved.

It all seems so simple, but Jericho’s instincts won’t let him rest. As he investigates, he finds troubling suggestions that the murder is a part of something larger and more sinister. But working within the boundaries of the law may keep him from finding the truth. If Jericho doesn’t break the rules, an innocent man may rot in jail while a killer remains free to strike again.

Inevitably, it all comes back to Wade. Because who else knows as much about breaking rules? And who else knows Jericho the way Wade does—not wisely, but far, far too well?

About Kate Sherwood
Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some changes!

Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage country”--other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!

Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy--the settings are just the backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take a chance on love?

Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets, squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s men need all the help they can get.

After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself, and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more stories in the future.

A Q&A with Kate Sherwood
1. What was your inspiration for the Common Law series?

I feel bad, but I honestly can’t remember! I started writing these books a few years ago, and I can barely remember what I was thinking last week, so… the origins of this series are lost in the sands of time.

2. What made you decide to go with four separate books instead of just one for Jericho and Wade's story?

It was really important to me that this be a slow burn romance. I wanted them to have lots of time to fight their feelings and then gradually give in. So the relationship was my central plot, but I needed significant sub-plots to fill in the space before it was time for the next step in the romance.

3. Among the four books, which was the most difficult, the easiest, the most fun to write and which one was your favorite?

The first one, Long Shadows, was probably the easiest. It introduced a lot of the threads that are woven through the rest of the books, but introducing things the first time is a lot easier than trying to pick them up later on and keep track of everything that’s come before. It’s probably my favourite, too – I like things that are easy! The fourth one, Home Fires, was probably the most fun and the most difficult to write. Again, it was all the stupid threads that caused me trouble – trying to make sure that every subplot was wrapped up in a satisfactory way was tricky, but also really satisfying.

4. If the series were made into a movie, who would you cast Jericho and Wade?

If he could control the goofiness and turn it into snark, I think Chris Pratt could be Jericho. Wade’s trickier… I thought about Jonathan Rhys Myers (with an American accent, naturally) but I’m not totally sold… I’m really not sure who could be Wade…

5. Who between Jericho and Wade would you hook up with and who between them would you marry?

Well, they’re both pretty committed to being gay, so I’d avoid both of them for both activities. But if they were magically made straight? Hook up with Wade, have a hell of a lot of fun, but then settle down with Jericho. I don’t think I’m woman enough to drag Wade away from his life of crime, and I don’t want to live that lifestyle.

6. You have two different pen names. How do you transition from Kate Sherwood to Cate Cameron and vice-versa?

I’m working on streamlining the public aspect of the two personas, just to make promo stuff easier, but in terms of writing? I really don’t find the differences too extreme. They’re mostly marketing distinctions, (Cate for het and Kate for m/m) but the writing style is pretty similar between them. As long as I make sure the right characters are hooking up in each book, I’m fine!

7. What words of wisdom would you give aspiring writers who look up to you as their inspiration?

“Look somewhere else—I don’t know what I’m doing!”

Or, slightly less dramatically—I think I’d recommend that they work on finding their own paths. In terms of writing, everyone has to figure out for themselves what works for them, and then, hopefully, keep working on refining their process and making everything better. And in terms of business, the market is changing so fast that anything that worked seven or eight years ago when I started out is probably totally obsolete by now!

  4. Interviews. You know I love it, Kate! ^_^ I agree with you casting Chris Pratt as Jericho, though Liam Hemsworth can take the role too. On the other hand, I don't think Jonathan's fitted for Wade's role. He's a little older for me.
