Review: Surrender at the Border by Risa Leigh (Border #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Surrender at the Border is a romantic suspense novel by author Risa Leigh and while I wasn't a hundred percent sure while reading if was the beginning of a series, it felt like one, especially since there were supporting characters who were featured prominently, albeit in limited fashion. The story is about ATF agent B.J. Carleton and librarian Callie Snowden and how a case to bring down one gun runner becomes a matter of life and death when both B.J. and Callie are abducted by a cartel with ties to the gun runner. A lot of what happens is set in the Mexican desert as both of the main characters try and find a way to get across the border before the cartel and the gun runner get to them first. Unsure of who to trust, B.J. and Callie have to rely on one another. Both Callie and B.J. know what it's like to have loved and lost, but denying the spark between them becomes difficult, especially when it feels like more. When Callie learns information B.J. kept from her, their chance at happiness, along with their lives and freedom, was at risk.

This was a pretty good read, one that kept me entertained for the majority of the story. B.J. and Callie are equally complicated characters who have painful pasts that have made them hesitant to become seriously involved with anyone new. Their blossoming romance spelled a renewed shot at them both finding love and happiness, and while the speed in which these two fell for one another may have many thinking insta-love, the fact that they were together for a particular period of time where they were also able to learn quite a bit about each other makes it a bit easier to understand how their feelings developed that quickly. There were times, though, that the shifts in their moods and conversations were kind of abrupt and frustrating. I did like, however, the evolution that their relationship goes through, and how they're finally able to move forward with their respective lives because being with each other has inspired them to do so. I certainly wouldn't mind reading more as the series progresses. Surrender at the Border gets four stars. ♥
