Review: Summer at the Shore by V.K. Sykes (Seashell Bay #2)

Summer at the Shore is the second novel in bestselling author V.K. Sykes's popular Seashell Bay series and shifts the spotlight on former teacher Morgan Merrifield, who is now at the helm of her family-owned bed and breakfast, Golden Sunset, along with her younger sister after the death of their father, and former Special Operations sniper Ryan Butler. Morgan and Ryan and have been friends since they were kids and things have always been platonic between the two of them...that is, until last summer, when the stirrings of mutual attractions came to the forefront but neither one of them did much to pursue something more. Now that Ryan's back for the entire summer while trying to decide on what to do next in terms of his career, helping Morgan with the B&B could lead them to a fling or something akin to forever.

Both Morgan and Ryan were memorable supporting characters in the first book in the series, Meet Me at the Beach, with Morgan being best friend to Lily Doyle and Ryan being a close friend to Aiden Flynn, but all four are more than familiar with one another. Morgan was more prominent than Ryan in the series starter, but Ryan stood out just as much as the two other unforgettable men in supporting roles in book one: Bram Flynn, Aiden's brother, and Micah Lancaster, deputy sheriff of Seashell Bay. I liked that Morgan and Ryan really did have a close friendship and were able to still have that bantering that you would find between two buddies, although the underlying attraction was difficult to set aside. Ryan is a mystery, not really willing to share too much about himself, but he's got his reasons for not being upfront.

Aside from Morgan and Ryan's evolving relationship from friends to lovers and much more, Morgan's relationship with her sister Sabrina was equally as interesting, especially since they appear to be two very different individuals. The three currently available books in the series have already covered the three best friends of Seashell Bay--Lily Doyle, Morgan Merrifield, and Holly Tyler, but I certainly wouldn't mind learning more about the younger siblings of the lead characters, especially Sabrina and Bram. There's also Jessie Jameson, who is younger than all the other main characters in the series, but seems to have her own story to tell. In short, Seashell Bay is chock-full of interesting people I wouldn't mind getting to know better. But keeping Morgan and Ryan's story in mind in Summer at the Shore has me giving it four stars. ♥
