Review: Meet Me at the Beach by V.K. Sykes (Seashell Bay #1)

Meet Me at the Beach is the first book in the Seashell Bay series about a fictional island community off of Maine by the bestselling writing duo of Vanessa Kelly and Randy Sykes, better known as V.K. Sykes. It's been about fourteen years since Aiden Flynn made the decision to pursue a professional career in major league baseball and get away from the fists of his abusive father and the bad memories of life on Seashell Bay. He goes on to lead a good life and makes a name for himself in the world of professional baseball. He sees no reason to return to Seashell Bay, having his mother and brother visit him instead, and when his mother passes away, it is her funeral that marks the very last time he finds himself on the island he hated.

There were only three people who mattered to him: his beloved mother, his younger brother Bram, and Lily Doyle, the girl he fell for in high school. When his career ends up in limbo after being let go by his team, Aiden makes his way back to the last place he wants to be at--both to take some time off while waiting to learn of his career options and to take care of a land deal his alcoholic father and jobless brother desperately want him to sign off on. Aiden would love nothing more than to never have to return to his hometown that never felt like home, but with his mother's memory and Lily's refusal to see Seashell Bay turned into a place with a place overrun by resorts and costly homes, Aiden is forced to make new choices.

This was a good second chance romance and series starter, giving readers not just the love story of Aiden and Lily but introducing us to recurring characters who get their own stories told as the series progresses. Aiden and Lily are part of families that have been involved in a long-standing feud, but it's the reputation of Aiden's family that casts a shadow, one that has other people on the island looking at him, unsure if he was like his father and brother. His time with Lily gives him pause and allows him to contemplate a life away from baseball and to see Seashell Bay as something more than the place that he grew to hate. Overall, Meet Me at the Beach was a pretty good read, one that had both drama and humor. Four stars. ♥
