Review: Hard to Forget by Bella Jewel (Alpha's Heart #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

Delaney has worked hard to become a true member of an elite team of bodyguards. She's grateful that her boss believes in her and decided to take a chance on her when she applied for the job, but she's aware that the rest of the team see her as nothing more than a nuisance, unable to do what they can simply because she's a woman. When she's assigned to be the bodyguard for wealthy hotelier Jaxson Shields, she looks forward to the opportunity to prove herself, but Jax doesn't think she's capable of protecting him from those who have been after him ever since he inadvertently witnessed a vicious crime. They push each other's buttons, but they soon want to learn more about the people beneath the tough veneers they both show the rest of the world. Acting on their attraction means crossing a line that could cost Delaney a job that she loves with a passion, but she finds herself falling for the man she first believed was nothing more than a misogynistic manwhore. Will opening themselves to each other leave them open targets to danger?

Hard to Forget is the third and final novel in the Alpha's Heart series from bestselling author Bella Jewel. This series ender was a fast-paced romantic suspense read about professional bodyguard Delaney (who had no surname supplied) tasked to provide round-the-clock protection for billionaire hotelier Jaxson Shields. Jax was unashamedly a sexist manwhore and he didn't think Laney was good enough to be his bodyguard, not because of her lack of skills but because of what was missing between her legs. He isn't the only guy in the story who thinks Delaney isn't up to snuff, but the one who really takes the cake in the sexist pig category is her partner, Kyle, who belittles her abilities, talks down to her, and questions her every move. We find out later in the story what motivates Kyle to act the way that he does, and while it isn't really surprising, it doesn't excuse his behavior. He was definitely the guy I disliked most in this book. Jax, thankfully, wasn't as much of a jerk as he first came off, and he grew on Delaney and me soon enough.

Delaney was a good heroine, someone who went after what she wanted and driven by the knowledge that she really is good at what she does and not merely because she's out to prove herself to the men around her. I did question, though, why it seemed easier than I would have expected for her to put both her job and Jax's safety at risk. She knew that the minute anyone found out about the two of them sleeping together that she would be pulled from her assignment, making the possibility of her getting fired for breaking a rule more real than ever and taking her away from being able to aptly protect the man she was falling in love with. But, I guess, there's no real rhyme or reason when it comes to lust and love and the choices that are made because of it. I liked the flow of the story and felt that having a female bodyguard assigned to a male client and one who wasn't afraid to show that she had feelings was one of the pluses here. Hard to Forget gets 4.5 stars, with the total average rating for the Alpha's Heart series at 4.5 stars. ♥
