Review: The Fall of Kass by Kris Hack (Ascent #2)

Just when everything seemed to fall into place for Kass Springer and Laney Lawson, the world around them fell apart, forcing them both to adjust to their new normal. They try desperately to find their friends and make their way to Laney's parents, but the distance they travel is nothing compared to the one growing between them. Stripped of his wings, the last thing Kass expects is to be bombarded with endless bouts of mind-numbing pain and persistent voices in his head. He wants to be able to protect Laney, but the tables have turned and with an Ascent like her whose powers surpass those of others, Kass can't help but feel useless. He knows he has no other choice but to do the unthinkable, but he would rather fall than forever be undeserving of Laney. Because in their new world, the line between good and evil has blurred.

The Fall of Kass is the second novel in author Kris Hack's Ascent new adult (NA) paranormal romance series and is the direct sequel of The Ascension of Laney. Things pick up several days after the events from the first book, and main characters Kass Springer and Laney Lawson are left with no other choice but to accept and deal with that state their lives are in. Between the two, Kass is the far more vulnerable one here, but I felt that was the case in the first book as well, especially since he had much more to lose in both books. Kass is still transitioning from the angel he once was to the human he has now returned to being, but he isn't exactly the way he was before. After all, there are always consequences to what may be considered bad behavior and his superiors certainly deemed his love for Laney as worthy of punishment.

Once again, Kris Hack had a few surprises up her sleeve and I liked that she kept that creative streak of hers going, refusing to fall prey to using time-tested but all too familiar transitions in the story. There is no absolute good or bad in the story, because the fact of the matter is that sometimes, those who we believe are good are susceptible to doing the unthinkable to attain their goals and those who we have labeled as bad can surprise us. Kass and Laney's relationship has more than its fair share of challenges to overcome, what with all the otherworldly beings wreaking havoc on the world and its inhabitants, and they were forced to choose the lesser of two evils. The Fall of Kass was an angsty but fun 4.5-starred sequel. Be sure to read the series in order and be on the look out for The Resurrection of Ryan in 2016. ♥
