Review: I'll Be There by Samantha Chase (Montgomery Brothers #6)

Note: This ARC was provided by Sourcebooks Casablanca in exchange for an honest review.

Zach Montgomery and Gabriella Martine have worked side by side for over five years, and while they used to have a comfortable and friendly relationship, things changed overnight. As of late, Zach and Gabriella try to tolerate each other as much as possible, though Gabriella doesn't hesitate to challenge him when she sees fit, much to the frustration of Zach. His treatment of her often borders on verbal abuse, but she takes it all, knowing leaving a job she enjoys and the man she cares for would be far more difficult for her to deal with. But what she doesn't know is that Zach has cared for her from the very beginning, but has had to shelve his feelings for her after concluding that Gabriella doesn't see him as anything more than her boss.

After a devastating mountain climbing accident leaves Zach homebound, his family feels helpless when dealing with the surly and angry man that he's become. With his recovery going at a much slower pace than he would have wanted, Zach would rather remain in the confines of his him than venture out and go back to his old routines of work and physical activities. But Gabriella refuses to let him sulk for long, insisting that the office needs him back at the helm, especially when Zach's father and uncle threaten to take the company presidency away from him. Now together in close quarters, Zach can't run from his feelings much longer. When he pushes one time too many, it'll take more than an apology to bring Gabriella back.

I'll Be There is the sixth full-length novel and the seventh release in the popular Montgomery Brothers series from bestselling author Samantha Chase. I've become a fan of the series as it's progressed and with the original set of Montgomery brothers, a.k.a. William Montgomery's sons, finding love, we were introduced to another set of Montgomery siblings, a.k.a. Robert Montgomery's three sons and one daughter. With this latest installment, all four of Robert's kids have gotten their happily-ever-afters as well, so I was thinking that this was the end of the series, but there was a line in the epilogue that had me wondering if there could be a new set of cousins that will be entering the picture or maybe just Christian?

Zach Montgomery and Gabriella Martine's relationship has had my attention from the time I got a glimpse of just how volatile Zach could be with her in Return to Me, the fourth full-length novel in the series. When he had the accident during his mountain climbing adventure, his treatment of her while he was in the hospital was really quite abhorrent, but then I couldn't help but wonder if there was something else going on with him. Theirs is a story that I've been wanting to read and it was worth the wait, what with all that tension between them, sexual and otherwise. There's a saying that words shouldn't have the ability to hurt a person, but as we all know, words can often cut even deeper more than actual actions, leaving scars.

Had I been Gabriella, I probably wouldn't have stuck around for as long as I did, because regardless of how much you love someone, you should never allow them to treat you like crap. Even after she finally decided she was done with his terrible behavior, she forgave rather quickly, and Zach, while he was, at heart, a good guy who truly loved her, needed to make amends and not just grovel and plead for mercy and forgiveness. I did, however, really like the story as a whole, and my only hang-up was the whole finding absolution on Zach's end. These two had chemistry from the beginning and with a nicely developed love story like theirs, I enjoyed reading I'll Be There, making it one of my top favorites in this series. 4.5 stars! ♥
