Review: Corrupt by Penelope Douglas

What the...?! Holy dark romance, fellow bookahlics! Even calling it a "dark romance" doesn't sound like enough because this took that sub-genre to a whole new level of mindfuckery, but then it's Penelope Douglas who's penned this masterpiece so I shouldn't really be all that surprised. This author made me an admirer of her writing and her pushing past the comfort levels of many a-reader by way of Bully, and yes, I know this new novel of  hers has been compared to her debut release, but I implore that you set aside whatever preconceived notions and not think of the aforementioned bestseller that brought Douglas to the notice of many and shone a spotlight on the anti-hero. Experience Corrupt and judge it on its own merits, and I hope you'll see what others have--that this is a story of revenge, redemption, and always, love. Of course, getting to that happy ending is far easier said than done.

There was simply no way Erika Fane could have not noticed Michael Crist. He was there when she was growing up, and even when he wasn't physically present, she could never shake the presence that lingered. Even when she was in a relationship with Michael's younger brother, it was Michael who occupied her thoughts and had a place in her heart. What Rika doesn't know, though, is that Michael is merely biding his time. He has his sights set on his brother's ex-girlfriend. You see, Rika owes Michael something, and now, with his brother away, now the time's come for Rika to pay up. The hunters have been ready and waiting for three years...and Rika is their guileless prey.

I don't want to give anything away. There's a mystery that swirls around the dark romance aspect of the book, and for that alone, no spoilers. What I can tell you is that this doesn't in an evil cliffhanger (YES!), BUT remember, there are other people involved, so I wouldn't be surprised if you end up like me: absolutely curious as to what happens with Damon Torrance, Kai Mori, and Will Grayson III. There are twists that, for lack of a less crude term, fucked me up. Hell, almost everything about Corrupt fucked me up. But then crude is kind of apt for this book; it's crude but also refined. I know that sounds contradictory but this book will have you questioning and contemplating and reassessing your long-held thoughts and feelings. When books do that, then you know they are special. Five stars. ♥
