Review: Under His Skin by Stacey O'Neale (Alien Encounters #1)

You know how some people claim that their hearts didn't start beating until they met the love of their life? Well, that's what literally happened to Kaden Chance when he realized that Annabelle Sparks, his best friend and the woman he's wanted for nearly a year, was actually going on a date with another guy. You see, Kaden isn't human and his heart only beats for the woman meant to be his mate. But as much as he would like nothing more than to truly make Annabelle his, following his heart breaks the rules and may put his brothers at risk. Soon though, Annabelle's own life is put in danger, Kaden is left with no other choice but to tell her the truth, but will she still accept him when she learns the man she loves is an alien?

Under His Skin is the first novel in the new science fiction romance series Alien Encounters from award-winning author Stacey O'Neale. While sci-fi romance isn't one of my go-to genres, I've been fortunate to have read some really good ones this year and I can safely add this series starter to that list. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember if I've ever read a love story between a human and an alien before, but for the life of me, I can't recall any title in particular. This was a great change of pace from my usual fare and I enjoyed the romance between bakery owner Annabelle Sparks and alien Kaden Chance. The best-friends-to-lovers angle added an even more interesting twist but still familiar touch to this love story.

Annabelle and Kaden were utterly clueless when it came to how the other truly felt, but there was such an easiness to their friendship and the risk of losing that may have made them blind to anything outside the bounds of platonic feelings. Sometimes, Kaden's back and forth when it came to dealing with Annabelle and his feelings for her became frustrating because of the hurt he was causing. Just goes to show that even alien males bungle matters of the heart. We'll see if that holds true for Hayden, the serious workaholic brother, and Camden, the easygoing alienwhore (as opposed to a human manwhore). I'm looking forward to what comes next and that's thanks to the fab 4.5-starred read that is Stacey O'Neale's Under His Skin. ♥
