Review: Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru by Tera Lynn Childs (Creative HeArts #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Sloane Whitaker has been banished to Texas after she's caught and arrested for an incident in New York. She's forced to take her senior year of high school in a school that may have the same leanings toward the arts as her now former alma mater but certainly doesn't have the friends that she misses. Now, she's also got her neighbor making his presence felt and he just happens to go to the same school and is also a senior. Her mother has warned her to say away from Truman Dorsey, but when she finds herself spending time with him, she sees the real Tru behind the facade. However, as good as he makes her feel, Tru knows that staying away from him is best, especially since he makes her want to break rules she can't afford to break.

Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru is the first in the Creative HeArts series from award-winning author Tera Lynn Childs and is about two teenage high school seniors and artists who find solace in one another from the circumstances they're currently forced to live with. Sloane Whitaker is a graphic artist and Tru Dorsey is a filmmaker and while she isn't too thrilled about his presence in the beginning, the two become friends and something more in the story and are able to be there for one another when times are tough. It took a while for me to like Sloane, especially since she knew what she did in New York was wrong but still felt as if she didn't deserve the consequences of her behavior (i.e. having to live in Texas for a full year).

The story itself was pretty good--a teenager learning that if she stops focusing on her preconceived hatred for her new home and thinking it has nothing to offer, she'll be able to open her heart and mind to the many possibilities it does have to offer and that it isn't all that bad after all. I did feel, though, that there were a couple of unresolved issues--Tru's home life and the ramifications of what his father was doing to him plus Sloane's own disconnected family situation--and since I'm not sure if Sloane and Tru's story ends here or will continue in the next book in the series, I'm currently left hanging on those two particular points. Still, I did enjoy Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru, especially the mystery aspect. Four stars! ♥
