Review: Absolution Road by Rachel Blaufeld (Crossroads #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Jake Wrigley may be a successful business owner and can have almost any woman he wants, but he doesn't believe he deserves happiness. As far as he's concerned, he's still paying for his sins, especially the one that cost him his parents when he was only a child. He's done having his twin brother save him from every single blunder he makes, so when he ends up in jail for assaulting a man, he's left on his own and comes face to face with a public defender named Alyson Road who makes him want to be a better person. Aly, a woman used to her independence and doesn't believe herself worthy of Jake's attention, stirs in Jake a protectiveness that he's never really experienced before. But when Aly's life is put in danger, his money and love may not be enough to protect her, leaving Jake forced to finally face all of his personal demons.

Absolution Road is the second book in the Crossroads series from author Rachel Blaufeld and while it may be possible to read this as a standalone, I'm highly recommending that you read the first book, Redemption Lane, before tackling this one so that you have a more well-rounded reading experience. While the series started with the story of Lane Wrigley and Bess Williams and gave readers the back story involving Lane's family, here we have Lane's twin, Jake, still dealing with the ramifications of his parents' death. There's no denying that Jake is a tortured soul and thinks himself unworthy of the love and happiness Lane has. The role he believes he played in the car accident that took his parents' lives has left him riddled with guilt that, whether as the child he was and the adult he is now, cannot be easily absolved.

This was a fast-paced story, one that was going in a direction that I was expecting until BAM! I was taken by surprise by the turn of events and how everything played out until the very end. Rachel Blaufeld threw in a twist I didn't see coming in the first book and she appears to have done it again here. There's no doubt that she keeps things exciting when it comes to her stories, and you certainly won't get any complaints from me. This book has romance and sex and a hint of mystery suspense, all of which kept my attention from wavering from start to finish. Jake and Aly may seem like an unlikely pairing, but they just made sense as a couple, filling the gaps in each other's lives and helping one another overcome their pasts and the challenges lay ahead for them. Everything comes full circle in Absolution Road and it gets 4.5 stars. ♥
