Review: Gypsy Heat by Jillian Neal (Gypsy Beach #3)

Note: This ARC was provided RockStar Lit PR in exchange for an honest review.

Nadya Montgomery and Grady Havens were best friends turned high school sweethearts and the one couple that everyone at Gypsy Beach thought would last a lifetime. But fourteen years ago, they suffered a loss that led to Nadya leaving behind Grady and the only home she's ever known. When she suddenly returns, she is a shell of the girl she once was--jumping at sounds and shadows, wondering if she's going to suffer another beating at the hands of her ex-husband. This is their opportunity to start over, but their pasts refuse to let them go, forcing them to put their freedom and lives and those they love on the line.

Gypsy Heat is the third book in the Gypsy Beach series from author Jillian Neal and it's a second chance romance about Nadya Montgomery and Grady Havens, two people who loved each other in their youth only to spend fourteen years apart. Nadya returns to Gypsy Beach as a survivor of domestic abuse and tries to rebuild her life in the only place that felt like home and surrounded by the people who mean the most to her, including her first love Grady. There are issues--a miscarriage, Nadya's abusive ex-husband, Grady and his brothers being suspected of crimes--to be resolved before they can actually move forward.

This latest installment shares a similar trope with the first one in the series, though this does have Nadya as a domestic abuse survivor and both she and Grady have gypsy lineage. It's obvious that Nadya was traumatized by what she went through with her ex-husband, but I do think that it was a bit strange that she was able to become as intimate as she was with Grady so quickly after reconnecting with him. I get that those who have suffered abuse deal with their situations differently, but it was almost as if it wasn't that big of an issue unless she wasn't having sex with Grady or getting all alpha female with the authorities.

There were certainly some interesting aspects to the story--trying to find out who was behind all the breaking and entering in the area (and that revelation was quite a surprise) plus whether or not someone was stalking Nadya and Grady--that gave it a tiny bit of a suspense thriller feel. The second chance romance part was okay, though I really would have wanted the two to have worked at it more instead of falling back into each other's arms as easily as they did. Taking everything into consideration, Gypsy Heat wasn't my favorite book in the series but it was still pretty entertaining. I'm giving it 3.5 stars out of five. ♥
