Review: End of Day by Jewel E. Ann (Jack & Jill #1)

"Are you going to kiss me?" she whispered as he moved closer until the space between them evaporated.

"Yes," he breathed.

His promise caressed her body as much as his touch that moved from her sweatshirt to his face.

She drew in a quick breath and held it while her mind spewed silent chants to any and every God anywhere in the universe that could possibly hear her. She asked for strength and resistance.

Jessica and Jude Day died six months ago. Four caskets were lowered to the ground but only two contained the remains of their deceased parents. Six months later, Jillian and Jackson Knight have moved into a residential community that's more known for the seniors that reside there than for anything else. Their presence makes them stand out, and one of those to take notice just happens to be their neighbor, and the only other still somewhat young homeowner in the area--Senior Master Sergeant AJ Monaghan.

While Jackson relishes the idea of starting over, Jillian continues to deal with the past they left behind. She still thinks of Jessica Day and the man who understood her like no one else could--apart from her own brother--Dr. Luke Jones. With her need to make the men she's intimate with bleed, Jillian knows becoming involved with any man will be difficult. Even as Jackson warns her to keep her distance from their neighbor, Jillian needs him just as much as he needs her, but will they be able to handle the fallout?

Have you ever come across a book that had you going "What the hell did I just read?" by the time you finished but in a oh-crap-that-was-too-effing-good-for-words kind of way? End of Day is the first in the new contemporary romance series Jack & Jill from one of my top go-to authors, Jewel E. Ann. I've always admired this authors ability to interject her patented wit in her stories, even when you get to the tough, heartrending moments in them. And yes, that snarky humor is ever present with this, her latest release.

I can't really go too much into what the book is about because then it'll just spoil it for everyone who has yet to read it. It is told from a third-person point of view and includes flashbacks, so readers are able to discover Jillian Knight and her relationship with AJ Monaghan while also learning about her past as Jessica Day and her relationship with Dr. Luke Jones. Suffice it to say that Jillian/Jessica has a lot going on and that behind her beauty lingers a darkness that she is very aware exists and it frightens her to a degree.

I love how readers are given the option to end this book where it says to be "the end" or to proceed to the cliffhanger. While I've often bitched about cliffhangers being evil, I will confess that I'm a masochist when it comes to all things books, so I went ahead and read the cliffhanger...which was evil...but certainly had me wishing it were December already and had the second book in my hands. Do yourselves a favor and read End of Day because we all deserve to read books that are as good as this one. It gets five-plus stars. ♥
