Review: "Inbetween" by Tara Fuller (Kissed by Death #1)

It's been two years since Emma lost her father in the very same car accident that she survived, and in that same span of time, she's haunted by things she can't explain, as if death has been shadowing her since then. If only she knew how right she was, because one of death's representatives, a reaper, has, indeed, been keeping watch over her since helping her make it out of the car. But he isn't the only one keeping tabs on Emma, and while her guardian reaper wants her to be safe and sound, the lost soul after her has only one thing on her mind: vengeance.

Being a reaper for as long as he has, Finn knows that there are rules to be followed. He broke those rules for a soul named Allison and making sure she got to be re-born and live once again brought upon Finn the displeasure of the one in charge, Balthazar. It also stirred the wrath of Maeve, the soul who was on the list to be re-born and whose slot was taken by Allison, courtesy of Finn. Now, Maeve has her chance to exact revenge on Finn and Allison because Allison was re-born as none other than the girl that Finn saved from the car accident--Emma.

Finn will do anything in his power to protect Emma, but trying to do so while still performing the tasks required of him as a reaper for the Inbetween, a place similar to Purgatory, and making sure that Balthazar doesn't catch wind is more difficult than he thought. With Maeve amping up her efforts to make Emma pay for what Finn did to her seventeen years ago, Finn knows it's only a matter of time before he has to make a choice that may very well not only cost him the only girl he's ever loved but have him banished to the fiery pits of hell.

Inbetween is the first novel in the Kissed by Death young adult (YA) paranormal romance by Tara Fuller and is about Finn, a reaper that brings souls assigned to the Inbetween, the place between Heaven and Hell, and Emma, a teenager whose life was saved by Finn two years prior. Finn's connection to Emma goes much deeper than what happened at the car accident because Emma is the reincarnation of Allison, a soul that Finn met and fell in love with in the afterlife and who was let reborn but only after having taken the place of another spirit named Maeve who was supposed to be reborn instead. It is that incident that sparks the angry plot of vengeance that has Finn and Emma constantly trying to thwart Maeve's desperately evil plans.

I quite enjoyed this book and exceeded my expectations, especially with as far as creativity and originality are concerned. I liked the idea of reapers and humans interacting and falling in love with one another instead of the usual angels or fallen angels/demons having romantic liaisons with humans. Emma and Finn were lead characters that demanded your attention and they being teenagers, even though Finn had already been deceased for decades, gave their love story a fair bit of innocence to it. Aside from them, the supporting cast of characters, particularly Finn's fellow reapers Anaya and Easton and Emma's best friend Cash, brought some much needed snarky humor to the more serious pairing and dramatic story line.

I love that the paranormal romances I've been reading as of late have been exceptionally good because those can be difficult to pull off, especially since the stories need to make you, at the very least, wish that a love beyond what's considered the norm was actually possible. It doesn't really matter if you believe in the paranormal or supernatural; what matters is that you believe in love and that it can exist between two individuals who are different. The way the love story of Finn and Emma was resolved was a surprise and left me with a happy smile on my face. Readers are left with unanswered questions about Anaya's actions regarding Cash, but you'll get your answers in book two. Inbetween is a favorite read for 2015 and gets five stars. ♥
