Review: "I Choose You" by Kristina O'Grady (Copeland Ranch #1)

Helga Hansen is in need of a career re-boot. From being one of the most well-known and promising actresses around, she's faced with yet another box-office flop and her personal life has become nothing more than fodder for tabloids. Her no-good ex-boyfriend cheated on her and now her agent and one of her best friends has been making career choices that make her look as if she's not good for anything other than the usual rom-com. What she needs is something that will challenge her, so when a highly respected and famous director lets her know that he wants her to star in his next film, she jumps at the opportunity.

Benjamin Copeland has returned to where he truly belongs--back home on their family ranch after two years of being away after the death of his sister Rachel. His parents and sister Beth have needed him all this time but chose to give him the time and space he wanted and now he wants to show them that he's home to stay. Ben's ready to help save the ranch and with the impending arrival of a cast and crew to shoot a movie, it looks like things are about to look brighter for both him and his family, in more ways than one. He's falling for the film's leading lady but can a cowboy and a celebrity really have a true happy ending?

I Choose You is the first book in the Copeland Ranch series by Kristina O'Grady and it had what I considered an interesting premise, thus making me request it to read and review on NetGalley. While it was an overall okay read, there were times that the storytelling felt choppy and disjointed and there were unnecessary inclusions that I guess were meant to make the story itself more interesting but ended up playing nothing more than minor turning points. The characters, while having some amount of chemistry, would go into sudden mood shifts and would make rash decisions even though they're fairly intelligent.

This book held promise but it just fell short in more ways than one and I think, had it gone through a fair bit of fine-tuning, it would have been a much more fulfilling read. In no means was it a terrible story or did it have horrible characters. Like I said, all in all, it was okay, but this book had potential and, as is the case with all the books I read, I wanted it to be "all that and more" because isn't that what all bookaholics are looking for? I'm still looking forward to reading the rest of the series and will keep my fingers crossed that what was good about I Choose You will be even better in the future releases. I'm giving this three stars. ♥
