Review: "Against the Ropes" by Sarah Castille (Redemption #1)

Makayla Delaney is an emergency medical technician (EMT) who accepts her best friend's offer to sell tickets to an underground mixed martial arts (MMA) event in order to earn some much needed extra cash. Makayla isn't into violence so she avoids going inside until someone enters Redemption without purchasing a ticket. She chases after him, only to find out that he is none other than Torment, Redemption's owner and top fighter. There's an instant attraction that happens between the two of them.

When Makayla discovers that Torment is actually Max Huntington, a very wealthy man who's known and respected in the business world and high society, she can't help but notice that there are differences between the two sides of the man she's falling for. The two things that appear to tie the two personas together are the need for control and their love for Makayla. Can Makayla reconcile that Max and Torment are one and the same and is she ready to trust him with not just her body but her heart as well?

Sarah Castille's Redemption series is about MMA fighters who belong to a fighting club by the same name. The first novel, Against the Ropes, introduces readers to the club's owner, Max "Torment" Huntington, and an anti-violence EMT who becomes a fixture at the club, Makayla "Mac" Delaney. A number of fighters plus Mac's close friends and associates are introduced here as well, and quite a few are memorable, which could mean that they'll be recurring in future books or will have their own stories told.

The story in itself was interesting and I liked how Max was an underground MMA fighter who just happened to also be quite a rich man. He was very much an alpha male and having Makayla both push and question him at times made for a sometimes humorous, sometimes intense relationship between the two. I did find it a bit strange how Makayla seemed to have an aversion to blood yet was an EMT and a pre-med graduate. She was also a tad clueless at times, not considering how her actions would have consequences.

Makayla and Max seemed like such opposites but their differences helped to keep things far from boring, especially since her naivete and simplicity played off well with his worldly and complex life. It also provided the tension readers want to see in their lead characters because nobody wants a couple to simply meet, fall in love, and live happily ever after without having to fight for that love they have for each other. Against the Ropes was a good beginning to what looks like a highly addictive series. This gets four stars. ♥
