Review: "Twisted Souls" by L.L. Collins (Twisted #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by The Hype PR via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Blake McIntyre and Liane Kelly have been best friends since they were five, spending two weeks out of the year with their families on Sanibel Island in Florida. Even when they're apart, they never fail to stay in touch, exchanging letters and talking on the phone. On the summer they're both fourteen, Blake tells Liane that they can no longer be friends...because his feelings for her have changed and he wants her to be his girlfriend. Liane is stunned and walks away from him, not to return for the next few summers.

Both graduates from high school, Blake and Liane will be returning to Sanibel Island. Blake is anxious to see her again and refuses to do anything that will risk their friendship once again. Liane has had a boyfriend, Ronan Collier, but he unexpectedly breaks things off with her upon the advice of his parents, promising Liane that he will one day marry her. Nursing a broken heart, Liane sees Blake once again and is taken aback by how much he's changed physically. Soon, their friendship evolves into much more.

With only two weeks together, Blake and Liane are forced to return to the real world, but will what they shared be able to survive? Try as they might to keep their love alive, the interference of one jealous and manipulative ex-boyfriend and an unexpected twist of fate may prove to be too much for even true love and their years of friendship and trust to see them through. Lives that were intertwined for so many years will begin to unravel, leaving them to wonder if there is any hope to bring back what once was.

Twisted Souls is the first book in the Twisted series by bestselling author L.L. Collins and is an emotional roller coaster ride involving two young individuals who, for all intents and purposes, are soul mates but are forced to confront challenges to their relationship. This does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger and I say this because the issues and conflicts were not fully resolved in this first book. The release of the sequel is slated for early next month so patience is something I appear to be in desperate need of lately.

The main characters were teenagers, as was majority of the supporting characters, so their actions and reactions in the story were realistic, even though there were times I wanted to knock some sense into them. I really liked Blake and when I got over my idea that Liane was using him as a rebound summer fling, I grew to like her as well. As far as Ronan was concerned, he was the kind of antagonist I didn't exactly like but I couldn't totally hate either, because he was still a kid after all and was selfish and confused.

This is the first L.L. Collins book that I've ever read, though I did purchase her Living Again series when the box set was on sale on Amazon and will be reading it soon. Based solely on Twisted Souls, I'm glad I purchased the box set because I can see the evidence that her writing, as all the rave reviews pointed out, is exceptional. She was able to weave a beautiful though heartbreaking story with characters you can't help but empathize with. I'm highly recommending this book and am giving it five out of five stars! ♥
