Review: "Nobody's Angel" by Sarah Hegger (Willow Park #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Kensington Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lucy Flint has made her way back home to Willow Park, Illinois after having run away from her family, friends, and the only man she's ever loved nine years ago. She tells whoever asks that she's back to help her mother take care of her sick father, but the truth is, Lucy's return is her opportunity to face the people she hurt and abandoned and to apologize. It's part of her twelve steps to recovery as an alcoholic and with the support of her sponsor back in Seattle, she's ready to bite the the bullet and try to make her amends.

She's not surprised that there are still those who are very angry with her and at the top of that list is Richard Hunter, her ex-boyfriend and the man she stole from her best friend and now Richard's estranged wife Ashley. He's never understood why she left and why she had to steal yet another girl's boyfriend and leave with him. For nine years, he's wanted to know her reasons, especially since all he did was love her. But aside from the anger and heartache, the attraction to Lucy has never waned, making him more hostile.

With Willow Park being a small town and everyone knowing everyone else's business, Lucy isn't surprised when news of her return spreads and people begin to theorize that she's back to take Richard away from Ashley yet again. Apologizing to those she's hurt isn't easy or simple and it hurts even when she knows that their acceptance of her apology is not guaranteed. Dealing with her parents is adding on to the stress of being back, but nothing is as difficult as wondering if she still has a shot at winning back Richard's love.

Nobody's Angel is the first book in the Willow Park series by Sarah Hegger and is a contemporary romance that has quite a lot of angst in it, but the angst is what makes the book a powerful read and one that I was happily surprised to have fallen in love with. Lucy Flint is an alcoholic but you don't have to be an alcoholic to appreciate that apologizing for hurting someone is no easy feat. The other person isn't required to accept the apology and the relationship doesn't necessarily go back to the way it was before.

Lucy was rebellious for so many years and wreaked quite a lot of havoc in her hometown. Even though she's now a different person, the only memory most people have of her is of that rule-breaking girl she once was. Trying to gain the trust and respect of those that mean the most to her isn't simple, but being home opens her eyes to how her relationship is with her parents, especially her mother, and that loving Richard may not be the mistake everyone else makes her believe it is. Nobody's Angel gets five stars! ♥
