Review: "Necessary Force" by D.D. Ayres (K-9 Rescue #0.5)

Boots and Philip have a one-night stand that turns out to be far memorable than anything else they've recently experienced with anyone else. But Boots isn't Boots. Boots is renowned photographer Georgiana "Georgie" Flynn and while at a shoot involving service dogs and their handlers, she meets Philip Dexter, a firefighter with his canine partner Zander. She isn't the type to engage in one-night stands but Philip is difficult to resist and she invites him home. They go their separate ways the morning after. Life goes on.

Two months later, Georgie's apartment is burglarized and her camera equipment and computer are the only things stolen. What shocks her even more is the sudden appearance of FBI agents treating her with suspicion. Told that she may be have caught a would-be bomber on film and her apartment needs to be searched for bomb residue by a K-9 team, she comes face to face yet again with Philip and Zander. But Philip isn't Philip. It turns out he's actually FBI Special Agent and K-9 Bomb Technician Brad Lawson.

With the FBI brass not sure whether she's a suspect or a victim, Brad suggests that he stays close to Georgie since they've already had prior contact. Georgie is upset with Brad's deception, feeling foolish that she was under surveillance by the FBI because of a stalker who may now likely be a bomber as well. Try as they might to keep their distance, the pull between them is still very much there. If Brad stays close, the investigation may be compromised, but if he stays away, Georgie may fall into the hands of her stalker.

Necessary Force is a novella in the K-9 Rescue series by D.D. Ayres and while it's listed on Goodreads as the first book in the series, it can be read as a standalone and doesn't appear to be connected to the others. This was a quick but enjoyable read, one filled with mystery and suspense and enough romantic and sexual tension to keep you occupied. Anyone who knows me knows how much of a dog lover I am so gravitating to a series like K-9 Rescue was an absolute no-brainer but I'm so glad that it isn't mindless entertainment.

Georgie and Brad were likable characters and I think it was good that even though they both knew that first night together was more than a casual thing, they didn't hope into bed together right away upon crossing paths again. I was able to figure out who the bad guy was but the manner in which it was revealed was still a surprise because I honestly didn't think he would take it that far. All in all, Necessary Force was a good introduction to the series and had me wanting to read the other books soon after. 4.5 stars! ♥

Date read: 29 March 2015
