Review: "Sand and Ruin and Gold" by Alexis Hall

Note: This ebook was provided by Riptide Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sand and Ruin and Gold is a short story by Alexis Hall and what it may lack in the number of pages, it more than makes up for in a rich and engaging story. Actually, I think the length of the book isn't even a hindrance, though there are probably people out there who will clamor for it to have been a full-length novel. Some stories don't need hundreds of pages in order to convey what they want. The really good ones stand out because of the quality of the work presented, not the quantity of pages to flip through. I'm happy to say that Sand and Ruin and Gold is one of the best I've ever had the honor of reading. ^.^

We never learn the name of the narrator or any of the other humans in the story but we do know who the merfolk are, especially Nerites, the lone adult merman in Cirque de la Mer who commands the narrator's attention and affection. The writing itself is hauntingly beautiful and captures the reader from the beginning and captivates them with a mesmerizing tale of how those kept in cages or may not look or act like us aren't the real monsters that should be feared.

If there's just one book that you simply need to read this year, it's Sand and Ruin and Gold, and the few minutes it takes you to do so will be well worth it. This is one of the best releases for 2014 and definitely one of my favorite reads for the year. I can't say enough good things about it and many other bookaholics seem to love it as much as I do. ^.^ So, go on already. Buy a copy from your favorite ebook retailer NOW. Seriously, you won't regret getting this five-plus-star book. ♥
