Throwback Thursday Review Re-Post: "Ruin" by Rachel Van Dyken

This is a re-post of my original Goodreads review for Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken. This is the first book in the Ruin series. I originally read Ruin on 22 August 2013 and posted my review the very same day. ^.^

"Maybe it's not in the perfection of life that things make sense, but in the chaos."

Oh. My. Goodness. This book... Just... Wow. I had no idea what I was expecting when I started reading this book today but I got sucked into the whole story and there was just no putting my tablet down. Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken is a gem and was truly an inspiring read.

I loved the story and while I have read a couple of other books that have tackled the main story line (male lead character has a potentially life-ending sickness then meets the female lead character who turns out to be the love of his life) and did quite well conveying their respective tales, Ruin was able to stand on its own very admirably. Maybe it was because this story had an aspect of hope and faith mixed into it or maybe it had that great combination of drama, humor, and PG-rated romance... Either way, this was an irresistible story.

Speaking of difficult to resist, the characters were exactly that! Each one was memorable but special standouts had to be Kiersten (aka Lamb), Wes (aka Wolf), and Gabe (aka...ummm...lovable manwhore?). Suffice it to say that Wes is my new book boyfriend. ^.^ The inclusion of Angela the nurse piqued my interest and I already suspected she was more than just a regular nurse, especially after it seemed as if Wes was the only who actually saw her. I'm a firm believer in guardian angels so this was a much appreciated touch.

I did notice several grammatical and typographical gaffes and while most I tolerated, I was bothered by the use of "half hazard" when I do believe the author meant to say "haphazard". So, with that in mind...

Ruin gets 4.5 stars. ^.^ I highly recommend this to my fellow book lovers out there!

This is the first book by Van Dyken that I've ever read and now that I've gotten a taste of her writing, I shall definitely be looking through her past work and shall be adding onto my never-ending TBR list. ^.^ And I wouldn't mind a book solely focused on Gabe either... Just saying... ^.^

Goodreads Rating: 4.5 Stars, rounded off to Five Stars
